"Bessie is Radiator Springs' resident road-paving machine. Everyone agrees she's a low-maintenance gal, but more than one unsuspecting hitcher has learned her quirks the hard way. Doc likes to say laying asphalt with Bessie is more like dancing than paving. Fill her with kerosene, gravel, and tar, and she'll produce the most beautiful ribbon of blacktop you've ever seen. But be careful! Don't pull her too fast or get her steamed up. Bessie has two huge buckets of molten tar and she knows how to use them! Just ask Lightning McQueen!"[1]
After tearing up the main road through Radiator Springs, Lightning McQueen is sentenced by Doc Hudson to repave the road by towing Bessie. The experience is less than pleasant for Lightning, particularly when Bessie squirts hot asphalt onto his "lucky sticker". Lightning initially rushes the job by pulling Bessie quickly, causing the pavement to be botched and rough.
Doc later challenges Lightning to a race around Willy's Butte, with the loser being tasked to properly fix the road. Lightning loses after failing to make the final turn on the track and crashing into a cactus patch. That night, he is forced to scrape off the botched asphalt and completely restart the paving process, while endlessly complaining about his situation. Due to running out of asphalt in the middle of the night, Lightning only completes about half the road. However, the residents of the town are impressed by the improved road, including Doc. After practicing but failing on the Willy's Butte track again, Lightning continues to work on the road, but receives tokens of gratitude from the residents: Luigi and Guido patching his tires, Red rinsing off the cactus pieces stuck to him, and Sally offering Lightning to stay at the Cozy Cone Motel.
Lightning eventually finishes repaving the entire road, but chooses to stay a little longer due to the bond he formed with the residents.
Later, the Import Racers are arrested by the Sheriff for speeding through Radiator Springs and are also sentenced to use Bessie to repave the road, experiencing similar displeasure to Lightning.

- According to Car Finder, Bessie is a Basic Service Equipment road paving machine. She gets her name from the initials for Basic Service Equipment: BSE.
