Geri is a popular character created by Pixar. He stars as both the protagonist and antagonist in the short film Geri's Game, but also appears as a supporting character in Toy Story 2 known as The Cleaner.

In Geri's Game

Geri is setting up a game of chess in the middle of a French public park. He seats himself and puts on a pair of spectacles to play the white pieces in the game. Due to having nobody playing against him as the black pieces, he removes his spectacles and moves to the opposing seat to play against himself.

He continues to swap between each seat, each time swapping between the spectacled and non-spectacled personas each time, until the black pieces begin to overwhelm the white pieces. Eventually, the non-spectacled persona gloats as the spectacled persona retains only his king.

In order to avoid loss, the spectacled persona feigns a heart attack to distracts the non-spectacled persona, whilst spinning the board around to gain the black pieces. Confused and irritated, the non-spectacled persona surrenders and hands over the bartered prize to the winner, Geri's own dentures. With the dentures, Geri chuckles and finds himself, once again, by himself in the park.

Personality

Geri is generally imaginative and creative in Geri's Game, disregarding his solitude and finding a means of playing his game. When actually playing the game, however, he expresses two distinct personalities, both of which are mere personas created to oppose each other as he plays against himself.

His spectacled self is humble and trusting, often choosing his movements very carefully. Unfortunately, he finds himself easily flustered and begins making mistakes that lead to his inevitable loss. Despite his expressed humility, he is not above unlawfulness and manages to win the game through cheating.

His non-spectacled self is extremely cocky and overly confident. He gloats as he gains the upper hand and exaggerates the movements of his pieces. But despite his narcissism, he becomes genuinely concerned for the non-spectacle persona when the latter feigns a heart attack.

Trivia

  • Despite having minimal dialogue in Geri's Game, his laughs and verbal gestures were performed by Bob Peterson.
  • It is theorised that Geri experiences Dissociative Identity Disorder, though the lack of substantial evidence to this, alongside the differing qualities between Geri's activities and M.P.D, makes this theory unlikely.
  • The color separations, print design and film for the Geri's Game posters were provided by Alpha DigiGraphics in Novato, California, with the printing done by Uno Printing of Novato.[citation needed]
