- "You had a good run. Enjoy your retirement!"
- —Storm to McQueen
Jackson Storm is a Piston Cup racer and Lightning McQueen's main racing rival in Cars 3. The poster child of a new generation of high-tech race cars, he believes that he represents the future of racing, and has little regard for older race car generations.[1] His racing number is 20, stylized as 2.0, and is sponsored by IGNTR. His crew chief is Ray Reverham.
Official Bio[]
“ | Jackson Storm is fast, sleek, and ready to race. A frontrunner in the next generation of racers, Storm's quiet confidence and cocky demeanor are off-putting—but his unmatched speed threatens to redefine the sport. Trained on high-tech simulators that are programmed to perfect technique and maximize velocity, Jackson Storm is literally built to be unbeatable—and he knows it.[2] | ” |
Cars 3[]
Jackson Storm makes his debut in the Piston Cup at the Dinoco 400, when he suddenly overtakes Lightning McQueen on the last lap, takes the lead and wins the race. When McQueen approaches Storm to congratulate him for his victory, Storm puts on a smiling face for the press but his comments show thinly-veiled disdain towards McQueen.
Storm later wins all of the remaining 9 races of the season and, while he does it, many racing teams start to fire their veteran racers and replace them with younger, faster, Next-Gen racers that are similar to Storm. The Los Angeles 500 finally arrives, it is the last race of the season, and Lightning realizes he's one of the only veteran racers to still be racing. Later in the race, Lightning and Storm both take a pit stop, with Lightning being the first one to leave the pit row and take the lead for a brief moment before Storm manages to catch up and puts emotional pressure on Lightning, as he's clearly struggling to maintain his speed, and telling him to enjoy his retirement. Storm wins the race and the season, while Lightning is towed out of the race after having had a rollover crash near the finish line.
On the eve of the following season, Storm trains intensively on the simulator to prepare himself for the season's first race, the Florida 500. Once he arrives at the speedway to do a qualifying lap, he accidentally breaks the record for setting the fastest lap ever recorded, at 214 miles per hour.
The day of the Florida 500 finally arrives. Before the race begins, Storm notices Cruz Ramirez and mistakes her for a fan (because of the paint job tweaks she made as part of McQueen's training). Somewhat patronizing, he suggests that they take a picture, before being confronted by McQueen. Storm starts the race in 1st place and maintains the lead for a good portion of the race, until his crew chief warns him that Cruz Ramirez is in the top 10. At first, Storm laughs it off, not recognizing her to be a threat. But when she moves to 3rd place, Storm gets concerned, and decides to resort to his psychological warfare skills. Slowing down so he can be next to her, he tries to paint her as an impostor, and tells her he knows just like she does that she doesn't belong on the racetrack. Happy with himself, Storm thinks he has broken her spirits, but before he knows it, she is back and drafting him. Ramirez remains behind him and trash talks him as she distracts him with quips of her own, disorienting him. As the two racers enter the last lap and Ramirez overtakes Storm, Storm, at wit's end, angrily rams her into the wall, in an attempt to not let her win the race. but, Ramirez manages to escape by doing a barrel roll over Storm, overtake him and win the race.
Personality[]
Much like McQueen in his early days, Storm, a prodigy of racing, is cocky, confident, and dismissive of his opponents. However, unlike McQueen who genuinely admired The King and Doc Hudson, Storm sees the older racers as an outdated generation that has to be deposed. Storm believes the future of racing belongs to him, and so is determined to beat anyone who gets in his way, whether it's an older racer like McQueen or a threatening challenger like Cruz Ramirez. Storm is a master of emotional manipulation, and will frequently use passive aggressive comments to try to break his opponents. Storm usually doesn't have to resort to any physical tactics to win, his psychological warfare and flawless technique usually being enough, but he was shown to be so bent on winning that he was willing to ram Cruz into the wall when he found himself to be genuinely challenged.
