On [[2005 |August 16, 2005]], Joe Ranft was a passenger in the 2004 Honda Element, which was en route to a Catch Your Spirit Program which helped men turn their lifes around, where Joe served as a volunteer. The driver, Elegba Earl, lost control of the car and plunged into the Pacific Ocean. Both the driver and Joe were killed in the accident, but another passenger, Eric Frierson, in the back seat managed to survive by crawling out the sun roof. Ranft left behind his wife, [[Sue Barry]], and two children, [[Jordan Ranft|Jordan]], and [[Sofia Ranft]] and a story legacy at PIXAR.

*Ranft was the first head of story for Pixar, plus voiced [[Heimlich]] the caterpillar in ''[[A Bug's Life]]'' (where he made his voice sound German), [[Wheezy]] the penguin in ''[[Toy Story 2]]'' (where he made his voice sound kid-like), and [[Jacques]] the shrimp in ''[[Finding Nemo]]'' (where he made his voice sound French).
 
*Joe Ranft was recognized for his work on ''Toy Story 2'', receiving an Annie Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement for Storyboarding in an Animated Feature Production (along with [[Dan Jeup]]).
