Tom Hanks (born July 9, 1956) is an American actor and filmmaker who performed the voice of Woody in the Toy Story films. He also voiced him in the Toy Story Toons, Toy Story of Terror!, and Toy Story That Time Forgot. He reprised his voice as Woody Car in Cars.
In an interview for Toy Story, Hanks said that when they asked him to do Woody, they used a scene from Turner & Hooch, which was Woody telling a dog not to eat the car in order to show Tom what good story and performance animation could do because Tom had never done animation work before and he stated that if the animated scene didn't make sense he probably wouldn't have done the film. Also, in Toy Story 2, Slinky says, "I may not be a smart dog, but I know what roadkill is," which is a line from Forrest Gump, when Forrest tells his girlfriend, Jenny, "I'm not a smart man, but I know what love is."
- What attracted Hanks to the role of Woody was during his childhood, he would always wonder if his toys were alive and moved around when nobody was in his room.
- When Jessie first meets Woody, she exclaims, "Sweet mother of Abraham Lincoln!". Abraham Lincoln's mother was Nancy Hanks, a blood relative of Tom Hanks, who is a direct descendant of an uncle of Nancy Hanks.
- Hanks is a model railroader.
