The Wilhelm scream is an iconic sound effect that was first introduced in the 1951 film Distant Drums. As its name suggests, it is the sound of a man screaming, and over the years has appeared in hundreds of films. The Wilhelm scream has also become something of an inside joke in the film industry, as its distinctive sound and wide usage has made it instantly recognizable, regardless of the kind of film it appears in. Beyond its uses in Pixar films, the Wilhelm scream has appeared in other animated films from Disney, DreamWorks and Illumination, as well as live-action films such as the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
